Mittelstandswald Initiative
Medium-sized companies from a wide range of industries are making Northern Germany greener.
Forests are essential for our survival: they provide habitats for animals and plants, serve as places of recreation, supply timber – for example for Euro pallets – and store CO₂. That is why it is crucial to protect our forests and actively contribute to their preservation.
Together with the Stiftung Unternehmen Wald (Forest Enterprise Foundation), STERAC launched the MittelstandsWald initiative. Founded in Hamburg in 2006, the foundation is committed to nature conservation, environmental education and forest research. It maintains existing forests, protects them and creates new near-natural woodland. We support the initiative with quarterly donations. Our planting campaigns with our partner network create a green future with trees and shrubs.
Regular tree-planting activities with schools, partners and other companies, as well as workshops on forest and nature conservation, are an integral part of the initiative. These activities also offer excellent opportunities for networking and collaboration with other committed companies. Each tree costs €5 and sponsorship is 100% tax-deductible.

Tree Planting Campaigns
Action: Siek Forest Kindergarten
Together with partners of the MittelstandsWald initiative, STERAC planted a dedicated woodland for the Nanus forest kindergarten in Siek, consisting of around 800 trees and shrubs.
Action in Linau
For forest conversion, a new generation of woodland was planted in Linau, adding 4,500 oaks and cherry trees to a spruce stand – strengthening biodiversity and forest resilience.
Action in Siek
A grassland area in Siek was used for initial afforestation. Numerous partners of the initiative joined STERAC in planting new trees.
Goals of the MittelstandsWald Initiative
- Creation and protection of near-natural forests
- Annual implementation of several planting projects (including in cooperation with schools)
Workshops on forest-related topics (organised by the Stiftung Unternehmen Wald)
- Involvement of numerous medium-sized companies from diverse industries
- Networking opportunities with companies across Northern Germany while actively contributing to environmental protection
- Vision: MittelstandsWald aims to become the largest initiative in Northern Germany (measured by the number of trees planted)
